Manchester United are preparing to make a £40m offer for Atalanta star Rasmus Hojlund as they look to sign a new striker for Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is desperate to bolster his squad this summer after a promising first season at Old Trafford in which he guided United to third in the Premier League and won the EFL Cup.

Manchester United identified Tottenham and England captain Harry Kane as their top summer target but now believe he will remain at Spurs.

The Red Devils have also expressed interest in signing Victor Osimhen from Napoli but look set to be priced out of a move for the Nigerian star.

As a result, United have turned to Hojlund and are ready to make an improved £40m bid for the Denmark international, according to The Sun.

Atalanta rejected a bid worth £30m from United last week but the Premier League giants are set to return with improved terms as they look to bring Hojlund, 20, to Manchester.

While Hojlund was not overly prolific last season – only scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances – he impressed rival clubs in his first campaign in Serie A

Meanwhile, Manchester United are set to complete a deal worth £60m for Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount, who will undergo a medical at Old Trafford in the next few days.

Ten Hag also wants to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and has sanctioned the departures of at least four first-team regulars.

The Sun say Manchester United are ready to sell misfiring forward Anthony Martial, midfielders Scott McTominay and Fred and £75m centre-back Harry Maguire.

Fred had attracted interest from fellow Premier League club Fulham, while United were said to be open to using McTominay and Maguire in a proposed swap deal with Declan Rice.

But Manchester United have admitted defeat in the race to sign the West Ham captain, who is set to join Arsenal in a deal worth more than £100m.
