A friend asked me this question recently, and I told him YES!. And he asked me how? Because he hasn’t found a convenient way to do it.
There are many people like my friend who want to open their bank account without walking to the banking hall. That is why I have put up this piece to help you.
Having a bank account in Ghana as an adult is almost a necessity – It is still relevant even with the advent of Mobile Money services from the telcos. It can also be linked with your existing Mobile money account to aid in a seamless transaction.
A bank account is required in most of the transactions and even by employers – so if you’re not employed yet and thinking of getting employed then you need a bank account to receive your salary. Transactions involving huge sums of money also require the use of a bank account.
Opening a bank account in Ghana can be very frustrating since you need to go to the bank in person to join their long queue (if not fortunate). But some banks have provided solutions to this age-long problem by enabling their prospective customers to create their bank accounts in the comfort of their homes either on phone (using USSD code), app or on the web.

Access bank is having been one of the best commercial banks in Ghana since it started operations in 2009. Their Mobile banking services are undoubtedly amazing.

If you want to open a bank account in Ghana with access bank on your phone, simply use their USSD code *901#.
You can open your account in minutes with the short code, *901#. Simply dial *901# on your phone, select option 2, then follow the prompt. You will require to enter your identification number – any recognized national ID such as passport, Voters’ ID, or Ghana Card.
After that, you will be asked to enter your first and last names, Date of Birth, Phone Number, Residential Address, Nationality, Gender, and then Referral code which is optional.
After opening the account, you will still need to submit your passport picture to their nearest bank to update your bank account record.
A small amount also needs to be deposited to make your account active.
Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) in started in Nigeria was founded by Tajudeen Afolabi Adeola. The bank obtained its universal banking license from the Bank of Ghana on 23rd February 2006, thereby paving the way for the commencement of operations.
They have also provided a seamless way to open a bank account using their short code *737#.
To open a GT bank on your phone just dial their USSD code *737#, then select option 1(open account) to start the process. After that enter your full name, your gender, the region you’re located in, preferred 4-digit pin to use.

Before opening the account, the following are the requirements needed to open a bank account with Calbank – these are needed for smooth and fast account opening.
- You must be at least 18 years old
- If you’re below 18 years, you can only open a Student Account (A passport or STUDENT ID would be required)
- You must be a Ghanaian resident
- If you are a foreign national, you must have valid work/resident permits
- A valid Email Address
- A valid national ID (Ghana Card is required)
- Proof of Residence
- A passport-size photo
Visit their website, and provide the necessary information such as name, email, and phone number. You will need to select the branch and account type.
After filling out the form, click on submit to complete the account opening.
